I really don't know if I'm an absolute poser here, and I'm being serious, but the election of Barack Obama has moved me sooo much.

If anyone watched The View on Wednesday, the day after the election - within the first 3 minutes of the show where they all kind of chime in, Sherri Shepard was a hot mess - she was weeping with joy and pride and talking about her young son having no concept of something like this not even being possible - and it was so beautiful, I was weeping right along with her.

This is such a beautiful moment in American history, I truly believe that.  There will now be an entire generation, and an entire future of people who don't know what it's like to live in a country who says they are so accepting but don't actually act that way.   (Although Prop8 passing in California is another step backwards...)

I never thought I would see this day.  I actually never thought of even thinking about it - that's how far away I assumed it would be.  I think it's amazing, and I am so proud right now to be an American.

I look forward to Obama's presidency, and hope that he can keep up the exciting momentum of an entire nation.

Cheers and good luck to all!

Power to ALL the people!

Kiss

YOU ARE SO NOT A POSER:) I cried during his acceptance speech and then started again while watching The View the next morning and then AGAIN during Oprah. I don't even like Oprah!

In all seriousness, I agree with you 100%. There are two reasons why this is such a big deal and not "he just won because all of the black people voted for him because he is black" as one of my Republican friends said, which made me sick to my stomach.
Anyway, 1) as Sarah said and contrary to sore loser Republican theory, the significance of Barack Obama's election has less to do with the fact that he is African American and more to do with the fact that as a group, this country saw beyond his ethnicity and voted for a PERSON and a MESSAGE and ISSUES, as it should be. No one saw him as an African American candidate, just a great candidate who happens to be African American. Again, as it should be. Just like Hillary Clinton was a great candidate who happened to be female. Equality is in the absence of distinction.
2) This election shows the absolute power of democracy. In The United States of America, we as tax paying citizens have the right and power to literally tell our government what we want. Even if you don't agree with Barack Obama's policies, you cannot deny that on November 4th the entire country stood up, unified (for lack of a less cheesy word) and told our government that we aren't stupid. We know that our current President and his policies of the past eight years have NOT worked, and we will not stand for another four years of the same. I get so angry when people say that their vote will not matter. The Founding Fathers designed our election process this way so that the country has the ability to tell the government what to do, rather than the other way around, which by the way would be a VALID indication of socialism.
The best thing to me, is that it seems like we have a national sense of purpose now, re-energized by our President-elect. It's ironic because I just finished a book that discussed that exact concept and how it has been missing from American society since the Cold War.
I just hope that America realizes that just because Obama won the election doesn't mean that we can all relax and wait for him to part the Red Sea. He isn't God and he needs our help.
We all need to stay awake and pay attention. If an important piece of legislation is controversial, we need to write to our congresspeople in support of or against it. We need to watch the news and be aware of what is going on in the world.
Okay, I'm done now:) YAY!!

Laura, please don't take this the wrong way, but I'm really surprised by your political blogging ability!  I know first hand that it's not as easy as it looks.  I often ask myself "wait - do I know everything there is to know about what I'm about to talk about?  Can I be debunked left and right?!"  But I just do it anyway, because I want to and I can.

Maybe it's because we haven't hung out in so long, but I'm totally digging what you're saying! (Not that I didn't in the 20 years previous...)

Good for you.  And I agree with everything you said.  Especially the 'national sense of purpose'.  I've never really felt particularly invigorated by politicians, but this time around, it's almost like we're - us 'exers' - finally doing something right, and what's more, most people - recovering republicans, elderly people, our parents - agree with us, and have come to realize that we're not all potheads who have apathy oozing out of all of our orifices.

You're absolutely right - we need to be paying attention and being vocal about what goes on around us because it DOES impact the way WE, as young'ns, live.

I am SO excited to support Barack and I can't wait to see what he'll be able to accomplish.  Although my campaign money went to Nader, I am so happy for the President Elect, and I'm also so happy that we will have at least 4 years of hope instead of 4 years of fear.

A friggen MEN!!!

Cheers to Laura!  I love you!

Umm I would like to go to the Hu Ke Lau and drink cheap beer and eat a big old Pu Pu Platter while talking politics with you and your hubby and anyone else who wants to come.
We should have a People For Sandwiches convention!
Seriously, I miss you and I'm unemployed...WTF...when is your next available day off? I will come.

Thanks! I'm not sure if that was a backhanded compliment or not but I'll take it! :) I wouldn't mind being debunked because that's how you learn more. And I think that no one should refrain from ranting because it's just opinion, and no one can be wrong in opinion because it's their own.

YAY SANDWICHES! JOIN IN GANG! Rant like no one is listening!
There I go with the all caps again....oh dear...

No!  It wasn't meant to be a backhanded compliment, just a straight-up compliment.  I was referring to myself as politically insecure - not you.  Foot in mouth

Yes - Hu Ke Lau - asap!

I think (and hope and pray and do seances...) that I will be laid off within this month, so we can Huke it up whenever we please.  A little holiday Huke, like old times!  Don't we 3 always go there when it's snowy out?!  Hmm.

Rant on sista friend, rant on!
